Brothers' Masterson-Bergin Memorial Debate 2024: A Valuable Learning Experience
One of the most awaited and prestigious events in the calendar, Brothers' Masterson-Bergin Memorial Debate 2024, was held on the 6th of September 2024 at St. George's College, Mussoorie. This prestigious Debate congregated sharp young brains from 14 elite schools that set the stage ablaze with intense intellectual competition including St. Jude's School, Rashtriya Indian Military College, Unison World School, Wynberg-Allen School, Ann Mary School, Welham Boys' School, Welham Girls' School, The Doon School, Convent of Jesus and Mary High School, St. Joseph School, St. Mary's School, and St. George's College who competed for top honours. Known for its strict structure and varied subjects, the event put to test not only great oratory and analytical skills but further challenged the critical thinking and performance under pressure of each debater. Long considered a cornerstone in the development of leadership, reasoning, and persuasive communication among students, its impact resonated far beyond the event itself. Representing St. Jude's School were Aditi Sehgal, Khushleen Kaur, and Parth Wadhwa, who took part in all three rounds of the competition. The debate included Round 1, a pre-prepared round with the topic, "This house believes that post-colonial States should actively and significantly decentralize state control to local tribes/regional leaders." Round 2 was an extempore debate on the topic, "In developing countries, this House prefers global languages as a primary medium of instruction over local languages." The final round, Round 3, returned to a pre-prepared format with the topic, "This house believes that developing countries should adopt economic development that heavily de-incentivizes urbanization." These rounds tested the adaptability, eloquence, and depth of knowledge of the participants. Though the event was highly competitive, it was a valuable learning experience for our students. Aditi Sehgal won the Best Speaker Award for her outstanding articulation and persuasive arguments. Khushleen Kaur also stood out, winning the Most Promising Speaker Award, recognizing her potential and strong performance throughout the debate. This achievement showcased the talent and commitment of the students from St. Jude's School, further solidifying the school’s reputation for excellence in public speaking and debate.
